Social media is a fantastic marketing tool for any business, but getting your social posting strategy right can be tricky. Knowing what to post and when to post can be challenging, and with so many data points to factor in, are you making the most of your social presence? The 80/20 Approach
The 80/20 rule has been around for a few years now, and it is a simple ratio to what your social posts need to be doing. The balance is that 80% of it should be informative or entertaining, and the other 20% is promotion-based content. Any small business owner’s biggest mistake with their social media is making it 100% about selling.
People, as a rule, do not want to be sold to, so making your social media just sales post after sales post drives a wedge between your business and its target audience. People buy from people, and they also like to be entertained, so knowing your target audience like to interact with and how to communicate with them is vital to your social strategy.
Personality & Connecting With Your Audience
The best social media posts are those that convey the business personality whilst remaining on brand. Allowing your personality to shine through on every aspect of your social media will enable people to see a human element to your business and that you care about your customers and not just about making sales.
If you are struggling to connect with your social media audience, try to:
- Inject some lighthearted humour into your posts
- Factual posts about the business
- Images of the company and its employees
- Shared content from customers – i:e images of products in situ.
- Updates from your business or industry
- Blog posts from your website
- Behind-the-scenes glimpses into how your business works
- User-generated content such as reviews
- Previews and teasers about upcoming events or products
- Memes and GIFS – who doesn’t like these???
Using all or a mix of the above allows you to connect your business with its target audience still and ultimately your goods or services, but without doing so in a sales format. It has to be said that any humour posts need to be lighthearted so that you are not offending people and always avoid religious or political posts – they will always spark a debate!
When To Post On Social Media
Nearly all social media platforms now come with an inbuilt analytics side, offering insights into which posts are doing well and when they are being interacted with most. Facebook, for instance, has an analytics dashboard that provides you with a wealth of information from page likes, age ranges and when your audience is most active on your profile.
Knowing when your audience is most likely to be active and interacting with your profile allows you to develop a posting schedule to benefit your business the most. For instance, if your profile is most interacted with between 9 am and 11 am on Monday’s you want to make sure you are posting in line with this and making it a solid post that your customers are more likely to interact with.
Posting when your customers are most active is vital to ensure that each post delivers results for your business. Thanks to how the algorithms work on social media platforms, your organic reach is dependant on how often and how quickly your posts are interacted with by your audience.
